- Aces Full : A full house with three aces and any pair.
- Ace-High : A five card hand that contains one Ace, with no straight or flush or a hand with no pair in it.
- Aces Up : A hand that contains two pairs, one of which is Aces.
- Action : Checking/Betting/Raising. A game in which players are playing a lot of pots is considered an 'action' game.
- Active Player : Any player who is still in the hand.
- Add-on : A purchase of more chips (optional) at the end of the re-buy period in a tournament.
- All-In : When a player bets all his/her chips
- Ante : Money placed in the pot before the hand is begun.
- Bad Beat : To have a hand that is a large underdog beat a heavily favored hand. It is generally used to imply that the winner of the pot had no business being in the pot at all, and it was the wildest of luck that he managed to catch the one card in the deck that would win the pot.
- Bad Beat Jackpot : A special bonus paid to the loser of a hand if he gets a very good hand beaten.
- Bankroll : The amount of money a player has to gamble with. Many players generally build a bankroll to a preset amount to allow themselves to take advantage of various bonuses.
- Belly Buster : A draw and or catch to an Inside Straight.
- Bet : To place chips into the pot.
- Bet the Pot : When a player bets the amount of the pot.
- Bicycle : A straight from A-5.
- Big Blind : A designated amount that is placed by the player sitting in the second position, clockwise from the dealer, before any cards are dealt. (Players joining a game in progress must post a Big Blind, but may do so from any position.).
- Big Slick : Ace King
- Blind Raise : When a player raises without looking at his hand.
- Bluff : To make other players believe that one has a better hand than he/she might otherwise have by betting or raising when they do not have the best hand.
- Board : The community cards that are dealt face-up in a poker game for all players to see. In flop games, five cards are dealt face up in the center of the table.
- Bottom Pair : A pair made with the lowest card on board.
- Broadway : A straight from 10-A.
- Buckets : Pocket 4's.
- Bullets : Pocket Aces.
- Button : Also known as the dealer button, it is a small round disk that is moved from player to player in a clockwise direction following each hand, to theoretically indicate the dealer of each hand.
- Buy-In : The minimum amount of money required by a player to sit down in a particular poker game.
- Call : When a player chooses to match the previous bet.
- Calling Station : A weak-passive player who calls a lot, but doesn't raise or fold much.
- Cap : To take the last of the maximum amount of raises allowed per round of betting.
- Cash Out : To leave a game and convert your chips to cash.
- Check : When it's a player's turn to act and there has been no action in front of them and he opts not to bet, he 'checks.'
- Connectors : A Hold`em starting hand in which the two cards are one apart in
- rank.
- Cowboys : Pocket Kings.
- Dealer : The person who deals the cards in a card game. In Hold`em the player in the dealer position is the last person to act. Because of this he has an information advantage, because he knows what all other players will do before he has to act.
- Fifth Street : Also known as the 'river' card. In flop games, this represents the fifth community card on the table and the final round of betting.
- Fishhooks : Pocket J's.
- Flat Call : Calling a bet without raising.
- Flop : The first three community cards that are dealt face-up in the center of the table all at one time. The 'flop' also indicates the second round of betting.
- Free Roll Tournament : A poker tournaments with no entry fee, but a prize offered. These tournaments are generally promotions run by poker rooms to attract customers.
- Grinder : A grinder is the same as a rounder. They tend to be semiprofessional players that make most of their money playing poker, but not as much money as pro's.
- Heads up : A pot that is being contested by only two players.
- Hockey Sticks : Pocket 7's.
- Hole Cards : These are the Down Cards in front of the players.
- Kicker : The highest unpaired side card in a players' hand.
- Muck : To discard or throw away your hand. It's also a pile of cards that are no longer in play.
- Nuts : The best possible hand at any point of the game. A hand that cannot be beat.
- Odds : The probability of making a hand vs. the probability of not making a hand.
- Pocket Rockets : Pocket Aces.
- Pot : The money or chips in the center of a table that players try to win.
- Pre Flop : The stage of a hold'em game when you have two cards in your hand and there are no cards on the board yet.
- Quads : Four of a kind.
- Raise : To increase the previous bet.
- Rock : A player who plays very tight, not very creatively. He raises only with the best hands. A real rock is fairly predictable: if he raises you on the river, you can throw away just about anything but the nuts.
- Sail Boats : Pocket 4's.
- Short Handed : A poker game of 6 or less people.
- Short Stack : A Short Stack is a player at the table with a low amount of chips.
- Small Blind : The amount put in the pot by the person immediately to the left of the dealer 'button' prior to the cards being dealt.
- Steel Wheel : A straight flush A-5.
- Tilt : To play wildly or recklessly. A player is said to be "on tilt" if he is not playing his best, playing too many hands, trying wild bluffs, raising with bad hands, etc.
- Tight : A player who doesn't play many pots. A tight game is one that doesn't have much action.
- Trips : Three of a kind.
- Under the Gun : The position of the player who acts first on a betting round. For instance, if you are one to the left of the big blind, you are under the gun before the flop.
